Which components are required for a client(user) to connect to a database?

The main components that you would need to connect to an oracle database are

1)The user should have a computer. ( ofcourse you need a computer . The idea is to mention the full
tree of components so was just mentioning this ).
2) Oracle Client software should be installed on the computer from where the connection is being
made to the database. When you install the oracle client software , Oracle net components are
installed as part of the installation. The oracle net component is required for the client(user) to be able
to make a connection to the database.
You can click on
Oracle Net to get some detailed information on Oracle Net.
3)Some Java applications do not need oracle client to be installed . The java applications use their
own
java drivers to make a connection to the database.
4)You need the
tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora files which contain database related information.
5)The
listener should be running on the database server.
